Idea #5: Magnetic Hoverboards

So as said in my last magnetic zipper post, friction doesn't happen with magnets repelling each other. A maglev train uses magnets to lift a train up. So it would be possible for magnets to lift a human up. This gives us the idea to make hoverboards. I don't if this is already made, but it would be a cool exhibit in a place like the Franklin Institute.

Maybe we can make penguins fly!

  1. You could check thinkgs like the Levitron ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin_stabilized_magnetic_levitation ) but it doesn't levitate indefinitely though.

If your idea is to get things to float with oppositely aligned magnets, just try to do it with a few magnets to see if it works. ;P

(It won't, the floating magnet won't even stay floating a fraction of a second before it flips over.)

  2. @Julie It would be like a Maglev train

On the sides would be opposite pole magnets. They would keep the magnets from falling. (I think)
